About Me

Who's that girl?

Curious. Passionate. Resilient. Team player.
Just a few words that could describe me.

Curious.
The first time I saw a website I was fascinated. Curiosity got the best of me. I wanted to know how a website was made and thus my journey began.

From very young I started learning HTML and CSS, first in Junior High at a computer class, then on my own using the World Wide Web. Finally, while in high school I took a course in Digital Imaging and Design from the Chesterfield Technical Center.

Passionate.
Curiosity sparked a passion, a passion for learning. I completed a bachelor's degree in Digital Graphic Design from Atlantic University College in 2007. In 2012 I finished a Master's degree in Interactive Design and Development from Savannah College of Art and Design. I have also continued learning through online courses, web conferences and pretty much anything that will teach me something new.

Resilient.
On my first year of college I had to take a portfolio course in order to apply into my concentration. While taking the course, the professor said, matter of factly, "if you are not accepted into your concentration it is because you don't have what it takes. You should consider a different course of study." I didn't give much thought to his words as I am a very possitive person. I went on to apply to my concentration, and guess what? I was NOT accepted.

At this moment you have two choices: 1. Believe what the professor said, give up your passion and look for a different career. 2. Proove them wrong.

I prooved them wrong. I went on to complete my degrees, work in the industry and even teach at university level. You may knock me down, but trust me, I won't stay down.

Team player.
It's been said that "no man is an island." I agree. Although I enjoy working on my own, I know how crucial it is to work as team. I have been lucky enough to work with amazing people on some pretty cool projects. These projects would not have been possible to complete on my own.

For example, while at Arteaga & Arteaga advertising agency, I was able to work on a non-profit campaign promoting getting tested for HIV. My part in the campaign was developing a microsite with information of the testing centers and additional details of the campaign. This campaign went on to win Cúspide, a couple of local advertising awards and it was awarded a spot in the Shortlist Titanium & Integrated Lion Category at Cannes.

More recently I was able to complete the global websites for Snapple, specifically the Snapple Asia and Snapple Latino markets. I was able to complete this task thanks to being part of an excellet team.
FUN FACT: I was able to finish the South Korea version of the website while working in South Korea for 6 weeks. I was able to connect with local developers and learn more about the market, and their specific needs. It pays to be a team player!

The Skills

  • Graphic Design

With a brackground in Graphic Design I am knowledgable in the main design programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

  • UX Design

Designing with the user in mind is a must. The experience we create in our websites can determind whether or not a casual user becomes a fan or faithful client. In order to achieve such a task we must research and truly understand our users and the purpose for each design.

  • Web Development

HTML and CSS are continually evolving. These are two languages I speak fluently, I guess you can call me multilingual. I can code from scratch, as well as use toolkits such as Bootstrap and Wordpress to develop full websites, landing pages, and the such. I have a basic understanding of other programming languages such as PHP and JavaScript.

  • Video Editing

The perk about curiosity is that you learn many new things. One such thing is video editing. Creating videos for YouTube became my hobby. This in turn became a skill that has been used to create content for various clients and their social media platforms. It has also given me a creative outlet with an insight to the power of social media and beign an influencer.

  • Teaching

As much as I love to learn, love to teach even more. For a little over 7 years I taught at Atlantic College University Web Design and Web Development. I worked closely with the Dean of the Graphic Design department in order to review syllabus, and create new curriculum. Outside of the university I've given private workshops to professionals looking to learn web.

  • Public Speaking

Loving to share my knowledge with others has opended the doors to speak a various events. I have given talks and workshops in the subjects of Web Design, Web Development, HTML 5 & CSS 3, Social Media among others in various locations such as Puerto Rico, Texas, Italy and South Korea. I have had the priviledge of impacting over 200 professionals through these events.

  • Web Animation

My first experience with animation for web was creating GIF animations. This later evolved to Flash animation (R.I.P.). But CSS 3 came to change the game. CSS 3 animation has given me the tools to add animations subtle enough to help the UX, yet complex enough to create fun and interactive projects. The possibilities are endless.

Why the unicorn?

A couple of years ago I discovered that I wasn't like the rest. Most people do one thing or another, me? I do both.

Not only can I make the design for a website, create the UX and UI, but I can also develop the website and create a finished product in HTML and CSS, while also optimizing it for search engines. And while we are at it, why not add a little CSS 3 animation?

It's my passion to be able to see a project from start to finish. This drive has given me the knowledge to work effectively with a team on large projects, where each individual has a separate task. These abilities have given me the tools to lead the team efficiently and identify areas which need additional attention or support.

It pays to be curious and always thirst for knowledge. Now, I'm a unicorn.
